A nicely-written article on how to identify allergies in young children, how to treat them, and how to prevent them. While the guidelines for preventing the development of allergies are controversial and largely unproven, parents with a family history of atopy probably would do better to err on the side of caution and follow the guidelines. The brief "food allergy fictions" section at the end of this article is enlightening: did you know that people who are allergic to a certain food may not react to it 40% of the time? Now that I think about it, I'm not so sure about that statement, but that's what it says...
Excellent article with a lot of information. And if you the opening paragraph about the grandmother and the ice cream was added just to scare you, think again. That is the EXACT scenario that happened to my son and he now has food allergies (not that it caused them, but I'm sure it didn't help). This article is chock full of useful information and is an educational read.
